Nearly 100 members attended the Society’s AGM and Spring Meeting on 24 May 2017 held at the Victoria Hall. This was a near record attendance.

Martin Holmes is continuing as Acting Chairman for the time being, but he would like to step down from this role to undertake other activities for the Society. Two Committee Members have stepped down - Mike Homer who had been on the Committee for 15 years and Susan Band for 22 years. Mike was presented with a bottle of wine and Rupert Band with an orchid to give to Susan. Both have been bestowed with Honorary Membership of the Society.

Lesley Parish and Tim Wood were elected to the Committee.

An excellent PowerPoint presentation was prepared by Tim Wood which included updates on Hart District Council’s Local Plan and current planning issues including Murrell Green, Wintney Court and Causeway Farm Barn.

Following the AGM, Tony and Wendy Heath gave an excellent illustrated presentation on the history of the Wintney Priory.

The Wintney Priory was the first nunnery in Britain to follow the Cistercian Rule. Founded in 1159, it stood where the Internet Car Supermarket stands today, beside the M3. Tony and Wendy Heath’s presentation took you through the history and dissolution of the Priory, the location of the Priory and its buildings. They talked about the people who lived there, their regime and how the nunnery was financed.
